HONING

ELG Carrs Stainless Steels can offer heavy wall seamless pipe, hollow bar and cylinders which to enhance the internal surface finish and tolerance of the item can be hones to give a polished finish to tolerances within 0.002”.

This can be used to stop any possibilities of scouring within a moving part such as a piston etc.

Honing is briefly described as a final finishing operation conducted on a surface, typically of an inside cylinder, resulting in a highly polished tight tolerance finish.

Abrasive stones are used to remove minute amounts of material in order to tighten the tolerance on cylindricity.

The honing process is used to obtain precise dimensions and surfaces in cylindrical shapes with a wide range of diameters.

The advantages of hones finishes are that they eliminate inaccuracies resulting from previous operations by generating a true cylindrical form with respect to roundness and straightness within minimum dimensional limits and provides surface finishes of a specified degree of smoothness, with high surface quality.

ELG Carrs Stainless Steels can offer a honing surface on bored tubes within the following restrictions:

Honed Bores: —

  • Minimum Diameter 20mm
  • Maximum Diameter 600mm
  • Minimum Length 100mm
  • Maximum Length 8000mm
  • Closest Tolerance Within 0.002”
  • Surface Finish To Within 16CLA
